Why Dzimbahwe ?

The Great Zimbabwe

The Hub is named “Dzimbahwe” (house of Stone), inspired by the magnificent massive Great Zimbabwe (Dzimbahwe). It is the largest of the houses of stone in Southern Africa, recognized national monument World Heritage site and after which the Republic of Zimbabwe is named. In Zimbabwe, several ten thousand years ago were San people who were hunters and gathers, living in the curves or under cliffs. They migrated out the Kalahari and the surrounding leaving thousands of rock paintings depicting animals and hunting scenes. Up to date, a lot of rock art and curves help narrate the way the ancient people used to live and fight for survival and communicate their life experience through art. Promoting art and culture education is important as tracing back time in memorial during the Zimbabwe stone age era, as art is presented as the first symbol of humanity, remaining bushmen paintings telling stories through rock art paintings thousands of years ago. These rock painting and great Great Zimbabwe ruins help express artistic creativity through out the centuries and are part of the roots of Zimbabwean art and culture. It is from this background that the Hub draw its creativity strength of artistic culture which is imbued within the country over centuries and anchored on promoting art and culture education, helping advance an active voice for sustainability, whilst considering art and cultural expressions as great long life learning processes and an important part of children quality education and future generations.

Why Art and Culture Education?

“.….Educated by an uneducated, talented and self taught artist”, Sarah Kuvenguhwa, Founder and Director of Dzimbahwe Arts and Cultural Heritage Hub and daughter of Samson Kuvenguhwa replies when asked why promoting Zimbabwean art and culture education. Many of the world’s great artists were for the most part self taught and not educated, so as her father was, yet he managed to work hard, use his creative talent and made sure she is an educated young women and it is from this background that she founded Dzimbahwe Arts and Cultural Heritage Hub is a creative cockpit established in 2020 and operating within the arts and cultural heritage realm of Zimbabwe seeking to bridge the gap between the academic professionals and the uneducated creatives and cultural practitioners, address global crises, giving back to charity and the creatives through art and culture education.

Many opportunities have been shared over the years and all aimed at the educated who have just secured their degree but not so much for a rural based talented creative and cultural practitioner who had to work all their lives as fulltime artists. She defines art as highly spiritual so as the artists hence, without being educated they can still be able to freely express themselves and be able to preserve our cultural heritage. In her eyes, to define an artist by their education or knowledge contradicts the whole meaning of art. Others ask what is Art? Answer would be “…what is it not?. From industrial machines designs, clothes we wear, gadgets we use, cars we drive, houses we stay, all were first designed and scatched by an artists somewhere behind the scenes.

Art has been intergrated into technology as part of craftmenship, pervaded architecture and has found ready expression in industry. She believes the next great world artists and creative innovators could be living within a remote village in the depths of Zimbabwe, the next Picasso is in a small rural village in Zimbabwe, uniformed and never to be discovered. The spirit of art is still alive in the recesses of modernization in the remote rural areas of Zimbabwe, Africa, and in the absence of written records art has been relied upon to tell contemporary people what life was like many years ago. It is from this belief that she focuses most of her work towards Zimbabwe rural areas.
